What is SEL?
Social-Emotional Learning, or SEL, is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions (CASEL, 2021). SEL requires school-family-community relationships to create learning environments that foster trusting and collaborative relationships, meaningful and relevant instruction and experiences, and ongoing assessments.
At Benway School, we focus on SEL that guides students to develop self-awareness, accountability, empathy, and civic responsibility. At Benway, we strive to create a foundation for students to successfully transition into adulthood. Our mascot, the Benway Falcon, is a representation of what we desire for our students through social-emotional learning; we hope that they soar in all of their endeavors, they set high goals and see clearly how to achieve them, and are given the tools to be resilient in the face of adversity.
Student's have been receiving "Shout Outs" for positive behaviors from their teachers. These message are read during morning announcements and each week a student is chosen at random to receive a prize for their efforts in spreading positivity.
